Why we invested in DocSpera (2024)

DocSpera is a San Francisco-based integrated healthcare, surgical data and image communication company leading the market today. The Pier 70 Ventures INpact Fund is excited to lead the $10M Series B round in this digital health company, alongside .

We were impressed by (i) a dynamic team (ii) tremendous traction executing on a complex regulated, healthcare landscape and (iii) impeccable execution.

The path from patient to orthopedic surgery is riddled with multiple friction points, unnecessary costs, and inefficiencies. DocSpera’s surgical coordination platform leverages the power of modern cloud technologies, AI and the company's understanding of the healthcare ecosystem to address the challenges associated with the work flow between surgeons, medical device providers, and health systems. They not only automate existing processes and care coordination, but also streamline information to efficiently deploy the $90.5 billion surgical implantable supply market.

The Team:

The team is led by Sam Ethiopia, the CEO and cofounder and ably supported by co-founders Sy Fahimi and Dr. Ken Trauner, MD. Sam was previously a Senior Exec, Data Products at Yahoo, where he worked with Sy. He gained considerable professional experience from his time at PWC and started his career at Eli Lilly & Company. Sy was VP at Yahoo, and previously at Intuit Quickbooks. Ken, an orthopedic surgeon, is a successful entrepreneur whose last company was acquired by Stryker.

The Traction

DocSpera is currently integrated into 300+ health systems, provider practices and ASCs to deliver real-time surgical coordination between surgeons, care team and medical device companies. In addition, DocSpera’s technology solutions are interoperable with over 30+ electronic medical records systems ("EMRs"), picture archiving communication systems ("PACS") and other key healthcare IT systems to seamlessly deliver automated and intelligent surgical workflow management solutions.

The Execution

While insight into the inefficiencies of the system led to their initial proof of concept and helped them establish a clear value proposition for surgeons, hospitals and medical device providers, excellence in execution has led DocSpera to the growth mentioned above. Earlier in Q1 2022, the company reported working with >1200 surgeons, with almost no churn. We love that!
