He played just 24 games in the following season, scoring only once, and spent most of the 2024-25 season as a healthy scratch. After being placed on waivers during training camp in October and assigned to the AHL’s Ontario Reign, it became clear his time with the Kings was coming to an end. This season, Thomas has tallied 13 points (4G, 9A) in 19 games with the Reign, but the trade to St. Louis offers him a much-needed opportunity to reset.
And this is the part most people miss: Nikita Alexandrov, the Blues’ 2019 second-round pick, finds himself in a strikingly similar situation. The 6-foot center has appeared in 51 NHL games over the past two years, recording nine points (3G, 6A), but has primarily played in the AHL with the Springfield Falcons. This season, he’s posted 14 points (3G, 11A) in 18 games, showcasing his versatility by playing all three forward positions. Now, he heads to Ontario, where he’ll compete for a spot on a roster already deep with centers but in need of immediate help after Thomas’s departure.
