Exciting news is on the horizon in the film industry as Jason Bateman is gearing up to take on a new project that could shake up the screens! The gifted director and actor, known for his impressive work on the hit series "Ozark," is set to direct "The Partner," a movie based on John Grisham's gripping novel. Tom Holland, the charming star famous for his role as Spider-Man, is reportedly in discussions to portray a junior lawyer working at a prestigious law firm who orchestrates his own death to siphon off a whopping $90 million for a questionable client.
Once upon a time, Grisham's novels were practically a goldmine for Hollywood, generating numerous blockbuster films such as "The Pelican Brief," "The Firm," "The Client," and "A Time to Kill." However, the cinematic landscape has evolved dramatically, with superhero movies now dominating box offices—much to the benefit of actors like Holland.
Currently, Bateman is appearing alongside Jude Law in the atmospheric thriller series "Black Rabbit," which debuted on Netflix last month, in addition to directing a couple of its episodes. His directing history includes the acclaimed features "Bad Words" and "The Family Fang," and he has received an Emmy for his directorial contributions to "Ozark." As a seasoned actor, he has also made his mark in well-loved productions such as "Arrested Development," "Juno," "Horrible Bosses," and "Identity Thief." Moreover, Bateman co-hosts the popular podcast "Smartless" with fellow entertainers Will Arnett and Sean Hayes.
When it was released in 1997, "The Partner" quickly became a bestseller. Hollywood's interest didn't wane, but for years, plans to adapt it encountered several roadblocks. At one point, the esteemed director John Lee Hancock, known for creating "The Blind Side," was attached to the project, which initially was set up with New Regency before eventually shifting to Universal Pictures, which is now fully behind the new adaptation. A previous script draft was penned by Graham Moore, who garnered fame for the movie "The Imitation Game."
In his new role, Bateman not only directs but will also serve as an executive producer. Michael Costigan is on board as a producer for Aggregate Films, while Tom Holland will take on a producing role for Billy 17, alongside his brother Harry Holland and Will South. Additionally, Jonathan Eirich will produce and Nick Reynolds will fulfill the executive producer role for Rideback. The project will also be bolstered by Grisham and David Gernert, who will serve as executive producers, ensuring that creative forces are aligned for its success. The oversight for this venture from Universal will fall to SVP of production development Ryan Jones and director of production development Jacqueline Garell.
Bateman is backed by CAA and Lighthouse Management + Media, and Deadline was the first to report on Bateman's involvement with this intriguing project.
As we await further updates, what do you think? Is Bateman the right choice to captivate audiences with "The Partner"? And will Holland's portrayal of the cunning attorney once again put Grisham’s work back in the spotlight? Share your thoughts and let’s keep the conversation going!
