The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is taking a bold step towards a safer, more resilient future, thanks to a significant project backed by the African Development Bank (AfDB). This initiative, now in its active phase, aims to revolutionize the region's ability to foresee and address human security crises, ultimately fostering peace and prosperity.

Human Security Assessments: The project will conduct comprehensive assessments in member states, identifying vulnerabilities and potential threats. By understanding these risks, ECOWAS can implement targeted prevention strategies.
Early Warning System Upgrade: Modernizing the ECOWAS early warning network is a key focus. This includes enhancing data collection, integrating AI, and providing analysts with cutting-edge tools to predict and respond to crises more effectively.
Capacity Building: Investing in people is essential. The project will strengthen the skills of analysts, ensuring they can leverage the upgraded systems to their full potential, thereby enhancing regional expertise.

With a budget of USD 2.7 million and a two-year timeline, the project is led by the ECOWAS Commission's Early Warning Directorate. A specialized Project Management Unit, under the guidance of Komi Koko Bossou, will ensure efficient execution and coordination.
During a recent four-day retreat, the team focused on refining strategies, from communication plans to procurement processes, to ensure the project's success. Dr. Onyinye Onwuka, Director of Early Warning, emphasized the importance of unwavering commitment to this transformative initiative.
